Recipe — Maple-Nut Treats
12 portions
Metric Imperial

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, at room temperature
  • 3/4 cup maple sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • Sugar-coated chocolate candies (such as Smarties)
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C (350 °F). Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, mix together butter, maple sugar, egg and maple syrup until creamy. Pour over dry ingredients and mix until nice and smooth.
  4. Remove a little dough, flatten slightly and place a few candies in the middle. Fold dough in order to trap candy inside, then roll into balls between your hands. Coat in chopped nuts and arrange on cookie sheet.
  5. Repeat step 4 until all ingredients are used, spacing balls 2.5 cm (1 in) apart.
  6. Bake 12 and let cool before biting in.

More about Maple

Maple syrup comes in four classifications, according to colour and taste.

At the start of sugaring season, syrup is generally clear, with a lightly sweet taste. It becomes darker and caramelized as the season goes on.

An unopened can of maple syrup keeps for many years.

Once the can is opened, syrup should be kept in an airtight container in a cool place.

100% pure maple butter contains no butter or dairy.

Like all 100% pure maple products, maple butter comes from the sap of the maple tree… and that’s all.
